Gaetano Pesce
Works

Gaetano Pesce's work as a designer began in 1962 in Padua, where he designed furniture for C&B Italia, Cassina, Bernini, Venini.
He became famous in '69 when he designed the Up series of soft, anthropomorphic chairs made of polyurethane foam, compressed and packaged in PVC: once the packaging was removed the chairs seem literally to come to life and model themselves freely.
The Up series is composed of seven models of various dimensions and forms. The most celebrated of them, which became a true icon, represents a full motherly womb and recalls the votive statues to the ancient fertility goddesses. The most unusual is a great foot, almost an archeological fragment of the modern era.
These creations were revisited in a modern key by C&B in 2000, series Up 2000, precisely to recall the powerful impact made by their break with the past when they first appeared, contributing to the growth and development of Italian style in the world. The Up 2000 series, moreover, by its use of new materials and elasticized fabrics, enabled the original models to retain their visual impact unaltered in time, up-to-date and in the avantgarde.
Already in these early works Pesce formulated the idea, which he continues to follow today, of the diversified industrial series, in which each object is similar to yet different from all the others. Materials like polyurethane foam and polyester resin do not require expensive industrial equipment ("freedom of material") and they make it possible to turn out small runs of objects different from one another though made of the same materials. "We're different, and also objects have to be different and have a personality: be unique, have a mood, have a character".
His creations include: Golgotha Suite (1972-1973) with the table in form of a coffin and the chairs conceived as shrouds; Sit Down chairs and sofa (1975, Cassina); the Tramonto di New York sofa (1980, Cassina); the Pratt project (1983, financed by the Pratt Institute of New York) for a series of new chairs; the Airport lamp (1986), which can assume different positions; I Feltri (1987, Cassina), chairs padded with different amounts of polyester to obtain varying degrees of elasticity.
For De Padova he has created chairs and lamps in colored resin, unique in their kind: the Crosby chair and Cloud lamp.
He has also produced numerous architectural works: the Hubin House in Paris (1986), the Organic Building in Osaka (1990), the Gallery Mourmans at Knokke-le-Zoute in Belgium (1994), the Schumann Home in New York (1994), the offices of the TWBA/Chiat/Day advertising agency (1994), and the glass elements of the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille (1996).
